Changes to CS2 Weapon reloads!

Reloading your guns in CS2 now more realistic - and harder

Valve has come with yet another update, which is probably one that is going to be controversial. The way you reload your Magazine in Counter-Strike 2 has now completely changed- and alongside that, your Ammunition and Ammo reserve now work entirely differently. The reloading mechanic is now way more realistic, meaning you lose every bullet in a magazine if you reload, as you drop the magazine on the ground.

New change to CS2 shooting and reloading

Counter-Strike 2 just turned into a hardcore game. And by that, we mean that now your Magazines and bullets act more like they should in real life.

Instead of reloading and your Bullets magically appearing in your reserve, now if you shoot and reload, you will lose the remaining bullets of that magazine. You now have to be mindful of your Ammunition and your magazines. The days of pre-firing and reloading right after you fired a single shot are now in the past.

Valve called it "For your consideration, an update pertaining to Guns, Guides, and Games". Now, let us go over the changes in this update.

What changes with this update?

Some weapons are getting a heavy blow, such as the Negev and the R8-Revolver. For guns such as the XM1014 and Sawed-Off, this change goes virtually unaffected, as these weapons do not share a Magazine, but are fed bullet by bullet. The Zeus obviously still charges up normally.

The vast majority of Counter-Strike 2 weapons now have totally different reserve ammunition amounts and magazines. Each bullet is now more important than ever!

For example:
  • The M4A1-S, for instance, has 20 Bullets / 3 Reserve Mags
  • The M4A4 has 30 Bullets / 4 Reserve Mags
You can read about it in the "Patchnotes" section of our article.

Updates on the reserve Magazines

A lot of weapons also saw a massive reduction in reserve magazines, making spraying and praying and also shooting through smokes and walls more of a dangerous gamble.

The AWP now only has 15 bullets in total; it used to have 30 in its reserve ammo! This is a huge change to all of the weapons, and you have to check that out for yourself.

Why did Valve change this?

According to Valves statement:

"In CS2, reloading used to have no real downside since leftover ammo went back into your reserves. Now, reloading is riskier: you drop the current magazine and lose any remaining bullets, replacing it with a fresh one from limited reserves.

Most weapons now have about three magazines total, though some have more or fewer depending on their role. Manage your ammo carefully."

Map guides for smokes

Map guides can now be used in competitive matches during the first five rounds of each half. They’re more limited than offline guides but still useful for quick reminders.

You can access them from the pause menu. Official guides are available for Active Duty maps, and you can also download custom ones from the Steam Workshop.

These will teach you some utility like smoke and flashes, but only for the first five rounds of each half in the competitive match!

Patchnotes

  • Reloading has been refactored to encourage more careful consideration of the use of ammo. When you reload a magazine-fed weapon, all remaining ammo in the magazine is discarded and a new, full magazine is taken from the reserves.
  • Reserve ammunition is now represented either as number of magazines, shells, or bullets, depending on the weapon.
  • The fill level of the current weapon is now displayed below the ammo count.
  • Tuned reserve magazine counts per weapon.

Conclusion

These changes make Counter-Strike 2 definitely harder. A lot of "Hardcore" games, and realistic military simulators have had this kind of feature for ages, but for the likes of Counter-Strike, Valorant, and even Call of Duty, this is not a common feature. Even in Call of Duty you only get this in the "Hardcore" mode. For Milsim games, or games like Tarkov, Ready or Not, this might be normal, but in terms of competitive shooters as we know them, this has not really been done yet.

This change will affect Counter-Strike and the way we play it a lot. Trigger discipline and sure shots are now really important, as we probably spray less and less smokes.
