Trade Protected Items CS2 Update

The biggest update to cash trading in years!

Topic: Trade Protected Items CS2 Update

Well, we all wished for a „big update“ … and Valve delivered. In the way we expected, or wanted? Probably not. But here we are, with a - to my understanding - new version of the 7 day trade ban.

The „Trade Protection“ - We can now revert trades within 7 days. Let‘s take a closer look.

What are Trade Protected Items in CS2?

Let us start with the basic definition that we got from Valve, before we dive deeper into how it‘s going to impact cash trading, marketplaces, and the item economy as a whole.

What are Trade Protected Items in CS2?
  • All CS2 items that are traded are protected for 7 days.
  • Which means, from now on, you can now revert all trades that happened in the last 7 days.
  • After doing so, your account will be restricted from trading and using the SCM for 30 days.

How does that impact trading CS2 skins?

In terms of trading/buying/selling CS2 skins, the two most common options are marketplaces and cash traders. The new Trade Protection feature will impact this process, as neither marketplaces nor cash traders can be sure that the other party doesn‘t reverse trades.

How will that affect marketplaces and cash trading?
  • Most likely both will be working with „pending balance“
  • With that, after you sell your skin, you will most likely have a „pending balance“ in your marketplace accounts, which you can cash out after 7 days.
  • For Cash Traders, those will only pay once the 7-day Trade Protection is over.

How does that impact scams and scammers?

The main target of the update was to reduce scams in Counter-Strike, which have been a problem forever and resulted in innocent people losing Millions (don‘t even wanna write a higher number) of hard-earned Euros over the years.

The Trade Protection is going to put a hold on many of the most common scams. From now on, users will have 7 days to find their items as missing, and can prevent the scam from happening without much hassle. That’s certainly one big positive note of the update.

Where will the future of scamming go? Probably towards people trying to build up a reputation/impersonating/trying to make others believe that they will pay after seven days in a cash deal without actually doing so.

Steam Community Market

The 7-day protection won‘t apply to the Steam Community Market, which will increase its usage in all likelihood. That, in combination with fewer victims of scams, sounds like a big plus for Valve.

Conclusion + final thoughts

I tried to put as many aspects as possible in this article. We are still early in the new update, and don‘t really have any „real-life“ experience or have seen any impact yet. I was searching for many different takes and opinions from people in the space over the morning and tried bringing them together in this article. Shout-out to @RaCSGO, @Anomalyxd, @Rambofight, @cantryde and more!
